报告摘要In this talk,I will briefly look back on the historical development of mathematical epidemiology, and give a personal perspective on how the study of epidemic models has provided many stimulus for the enrichment of the theories of differential equations and dynamical systems. I hope to give the studentsand young researchers a historical view on how the research thinking in mathematical epidemiology hasevolved over the past century, driven in part by the development of mathematical and computational tools in dynamical systems, but to a larger part by challenges from epidemiology of infectious diseases and public health.

The emphasis of the talk is about some of the new challenges presented to dynamists/mathematicians/modelersfrom public health, as we have seen during the current COVID-19 epidemic. The new challenges need to bearticulated into mathematical questions and mathematical theories need to be developed to properly address them. This will further enrich the mathematics of dynamical systems, but also ensure that mathematicalepidemiology can provide practical support for public health. The talk will be non-technical and aimed at a general audience.
